Traffic Calming Roadway Changes on 88th Street and Abbott Avenue
(Updated July 11, 2018)

Fact Sheet - 88th Street Traffic Calming

Objective

To help reduce traffic speed, prevent traffic intrusion and cut-thru traffic into the residential area, as well as prohibit vehicles from backing into residents’ driveways and making an illegal U-turn on Abbott Avenue.

Project

Based on feedback received from residents directly impacted by the recent traffic pattern modification trial on 88th Street and Abbott Avenue, as well as approval granted by the Town Commission, the Town of Surfside implemented traffic calming roadway changes on June 9, 2018. The work took approximately one month to complete and includes the creation of a traffic control island on 88th Street and Byron Ave, along with the beautification of the roundabout on 88th Street and Abbott Avenue. Modifications were made to the existing roundabout on 88th Street and Abbott Avenue to allow for a fully circular flow of traffic. See above diagram.

Background

The Town of Surfside conducted a traffic pattern modification trial on 88th Street and Abbott Avenue, which included the addition of a roundabout and extension of the curb going east on 88th Street, in order to help deter drivers, who are heading north on Byron Avenue from Miami Beach, from cutting through the residential neighborhood and making an illegal U-turn at the intersection.

Following the trial, Town staff concluded the extension of the curb on 88th Street is not the best solution because it creates opportunities for drivers to back in to private driveways and make illegal U-turns. Additionally, Town staff surveyed a total of 10 residences directly impacted by the study to come to a consensus for a better course of action.

Taking resident feedback into consideration, the Town of Surfside has removed the curb, but kept the existing roundabout, in order to allow for a fully circular flow of traffic. By doing so, the intent is to help prevent dangerous situations and to keep residents safe.

Furthermore, to avoid traffic intrusion, the Town of Surfside has installed a traffic island on the east lane of Byron Avenue and 88th Street to help avert north bound traffic from cutting through the residential neighborhoods.

The Town of Surfside has installed signs to reflect the new traffic pattern, as well as beautify the roundabout on 88th Street and Abbott Avenue.
