In a bid to enhance public safety, the Surfside Police Department is urging residents to follow essential bike safety guidelines. As the Town continues to encourage cycling for commuting and recreation, these measures are designed to protect both cyclists and pedestrians.
“We want everyone to enjoy biking while staying safe,” said Surfside Police Sgt. Matelis. “Following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.”
Key bike safety tips include:
- Wear a Helmet: Ensure your helmet fits properly to protect your head.
- Follow Traffic Laws: Cyclists must adhere to the same rules as motorists, including stopping at red lights and stop signs.
- Stay Visible: Use lights and reflectors, especially after dark, and wear bright clothing to increase visibility.
- Use Hand Signals: Communicate your intentions to drivers and pedestrians by using hand signals when turning or stopping.
- Stay Alert: Keep an eye out for cars, pedestrians, and potential hazards.
Sgt. Matelis emphasized the importance of community cooperation in making Surfside a safe place for cyclists. “By working together and following these simple guidelines, we can prevent accidents and enjoy a safer environment for everyone.”
